Our Efforts 

Sustainability is one of our core tenets at Captain + Stoker, and though we've never thrown it in the spotlight (we think it should be the default!), we do get many questions, so we decided it's time to dedicate a page to our efforts.

Certifications and Qualifications

We are part of the Surfrider foundation, as well as the California Green Business Network with Green Business Certification. 

This means we have fulfilled standards for waste reduction, water conservation, and energy conservation.

We also only use waste-reduction focused products such as compostable and home-biodegradable takeaway materials.

Recycling Programs + Packaging

We return and refill/reuse all 5lb service bags from our cafes, keeping them in rotation until they’re no longer usable.

We’ve set up return programs for customers (as well as within our roastery) for 12 ounce retail bags, which get sent to Hydroblox and ByFusion, two companies that repurpose bags to create building materials for structural and plumbing/drainage components.

We have also created a fully recyclable aluminum can package design for white label projects and some of our limited edition coffees.

Roastery

We offer jute bags free for pickup for anyone who wants to repurpose them, or use them in farm or gardening practices.

We also offer chaff pickup, which is the skin that comes off of the coffee when roasting. It collects in a chamber in part of the roasting process, and it's a great addition to compost as it's carbon rich and can neutralize nitrogen rich soil.
